On Friday of last week, British startup Deliveroo announced they had closed $575 million in funding, with Amazon leading the round. In total, the food delivery company has raised over 1.5 billion dollars.

While US meal delivery seems to be in a constant state of competition and questionable profit margins, Deliveroo appears to be a clear leader in the space.

Interestingly, Amazon had recently scaled back their UK meal delivery operations, eliminating the Amazon Restaurants arm in the UK. But with this big investment, there is clear proof that the company believes there is a future in meal delivery in the UK and Europe.

“We’re impressed with Deliveroo’s approach, and their dedication to providing customers with an ever increasing selection of great restaurants along with convenient delivery options,” said Doug Gurr, Amazon U.K. country manager, in a statement. “Will and his team have built an innovative technology and service, and we’re excited to see what they do next.”
